The political winds are blowing early in the Town of Aurora for the November election, with Councilman James J. Bach announcing Monday night that he will seek the supervisor post this fall and will seek the Republican nomination.
Bach’s announcement comes about a week after current Supervisor Jolene M. Jeffe announced she will not seek a third term and instead plans to run for a Town Board seat, which would demand less time than the supervisor post, given her changing family and personal commitments.
“I decided to run for supervisor after hearing Jolene was not. I would not have run had she decided to run again for supervisor,” Bach said after the Town Board meeting Monday night. “No one else on the board is running for supervisor, and I want to continue what great work we’re doing.”
Bach, 56, acknowledged the town faces more tough budget years ahead, but he said his long-term objective would be to help the town become free of debt. He said he also will seek the Conservative and Independence nominations for the supervisor post, which carries a two-year term.
An Aurora native and vice president of Bach’s Towing & Automotive Repair in Elma, Bach said he has enjoyed serving as a councilman since 2009.
He was first appointed for one year in the unexpired term of then-Councilwoman Kelly Wahl. Bach then was elected in 2010 to fill out the remainder of Wahl’s term before he ran in 2011 for his first full four-year board term. As he runs for supervisor, he still has two years remaining in his Council seat.
At the same time Monday, political newcomer Chuck Snyder, a member of the town’s Planning & Conservation Board, announced he plans to run for a Town Board seat. Snyder, 57, is owner and president of Charles D. Snyder Inc., a general contracting firm. He was one of two clerks of the works for the town, helping to oversee the recent renovations of the Gleed Avenue office building into the town’s new Southside Municipal Center.
Snyder is in his third year on the town Planning & Conservation Board. A 23-year resident of Aurora, Snyder said he also will seek the Republican endorsement.
Incumbent board members James Collins and Susan Friess’ seats also are up for election. Neither would comment Monday about their plans.
