SILVER CREEK – Former Silver Creek School Superintendent David O’Rourke visited the Board of Education on Wednesday evening in his new role as superintendent of Erie 1 BOCES.
O’Rourke, who said he will be visiting all 29 districts in the BOCES region, asked the members of the board to complete a survey about services currently provided and to indicate needs that they see in the future for the district.
He explained the process used to determine BOCES funding and said that he will present no increase in administrative costs for the next school year.
BOCES provides many services to school districts besides technical and career education and special education for students. O’Rourke said the district has an 88.7 graduation rate for students enrolled in the technical programs.
Thirteen members serve on the board for BOCES, coming from districts throughout the region. Four campuses are included in the region – East Aurora, Angola, Fredonia and Jamestown.
In other matters, Silver Creek Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanisch briefly reported on state aid for the coming year. He said Silver Creek can expect to receive a 1.27 percent increase in aid, according to information on the state website. He said the aid formula is different for all districts. He also said no formula has been provided to determine how additional funds may help districts with other financial needs.
The first public forum on the 2013-14 budget will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the school auditorium. The board will hold a budget workshop at 6 p.m. Feb. 13.
A school safety meeting will be held March 11 and will include members of the elementary and high school faculties. Ljiljanisch said he already has met with members of the State Police and Silver Creek Police Chief Timothy Roche.
The superintendent said that a school safety audit will be conducted by police prior to the meeting and that teachers will be made aware of the safety issues it raises. He said there will also be a School Safety Council meeting Jan. 30.
Bids for more capital improvements at the school were announced Jan. 15. Habiterra Associates, architects for the district’s capital plan, will present information on the next capital project at the Feb. 13 board meeting.
