Buffalo: Act II
I’d like to write a ditty about our fair city,
Once called Queen of the Lakes,
With magnificent buildings to be seen,
Even held a Pan-American Exposition!
Buffalo’s factory stacks were smokin’
There were good jobs galore, and I’m not jokin’
Once one of the top cities in the nation,
Yes, we created quite a sensation.
Our port was busy with huge lake freighters,
Carrying wheat, flour, cereal, iron ore, steel, autos.
The harbor was filled with boats
And every kind of vessel that floats.
How distant all that seems now.
We look around and ask, “How?”
How did it all go away?
Who are we today?
Buffalo is not dead,
It’s not even dying,
It’s reincarnating itself
And I’m not lying.
This metropolis is teeming with new life:
The young who create their own lifestyle
And immigrants who find
Our city very much worthwhile.
I believe I’m not alone
When I think it appears
That within 25 years,
Buffalo will reclaim its throne.
