Noco, the energy company that has expanded into operating convenience stores, is marking its 80th anniversary today with the grand opening of its biggest express store.
The 6,000-square-foot, newly constructed store at 4221 Walden Ave. in Lancaster is almost twice the size of a typical Noco, and it’s the first location to boast a travel center and commercial diesel-fueling stations.
“We’ve come a long way in evolving our current convenience store model from the first store we opened in 1984,” said Michael F. Newman, the company’s executive vice president.
The store, at Walden Avenue and Pavement Road, has three commercial diesel fueling stations. It is a franchise and employs about 25 people.
Included is a 24-hour Tim Hortons, with a drive-thru, and a Subway, which is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
There’s also a cafe-like seating area with free Wi-Fi. “It has a big eating area with a lot of the neat advantages to it,” Newman said.
The front design is of a regular gas station. But in the back is a larger island with a truck-stop layout, Newman said. “We try designing stores more around the demographics of the area,” he said.
The new store is located in an area with a lot of commercial traffic and enterprises.
“It will appeal to the truckers that go back and forth to the eastern part of the state, plus the people who are locally based there,” Newman said.
He said the company is trying to attract a clientele with more women and families by offering a brighter store, larger windows and offerings of fresh and healthy food.
