Dust off that snow shovel. Gas up the blowers. And kids, get your sleds ready.
Heavy snow is headed our way.
A “very large system” was expected to hit the region this afternoon, bringing strong winds and lots of snow, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Jon Hitchcock.
The first flakes should hit the Southern Tier early this afternoon and in Buffalo by about 4 to 5 p.m.
And then it’s really going to start to fall.
Starting at about 7 or 8 p.m. through 4 to 5 a.m. Thursday, heavy snow, falling at times at a rate of two inches an hour, has been forecasted.
The heavy snow prompted a winter storm warning from the weather service and it will be in effect from 4 p.m. today until 4 p.m. Thursday.
“The afternoon rush hour might be getting slippery,” Hitchcock said.
But the worst shouldn’t start until rush hour is over.
The heavy snow combined with winds in the 20 to 30 mph range will likely make for difficult driving conditions.
Temperatures will hover in the 20s, with highs at about 29 and lows in the mid 20s.
Some light snow is expected Thursday, and Friday should be mostly dry. Some light snow may also fall during the weekend.
