That steamroller parked outside the Western New York Book Arts Center (468 Washington St.) isn’t part of Buffalo’s recent construction boom. It’s there, odd as this may sound, for the sake of art.

The steamroller will be used during WNYBAC’s Buffalo Book Fest on Saturday, an annual event meant to celebrate the art and craft of bookmaking. Visitors to the festival will be able to assist in the creation of mammoth steamroller prints, in which the machine becomes part of an ad hoc printing press. Artists making prints include Tom Rooney, Keegan Onefoot-Wenkman, Jennifer Farrell, Jodi Hamman and Christine Gallisdorfer.

The festival, timed to coincide with the annual Buffalo Infringement Festival, also includes an artist market with work by some 20 local and national purveyors of handmade art or small-press publications. The center is also making available a dizzying array of free mini-workshops, including printmaking for kids, paper marbling, bookbinding and screenprinting demonstrations. To top it all off, Lloyd Taco Truck will be dishing out food from noon to 3 p.m. The fest runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 348-1430 or visit wnybookarts.org.
