Tonawanda City School District officials who were concerned about facing another major and costly roof replacement breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday night, as construction managers reported the replacement of Riverview Elementary’s roof is going exactly as planned.
The district ran into issues replacing Mullen Elementary’s roof last year, as it was discovered during construction that the surface experienced more water damage than contractors initially estimated. The badly damaged roof resulted in the district going about $170,000 over budget.
Combined with higher than expected bids for other items in the capital project, district officials scaled down some aspects of the $11.9 million project.
Replacement of the Riverview roof is about 85 percent complete.
“We’re not going to have the same issue we had at Mullen,” said David Seiflein, project superintendent at Pike Construction. “(The roof) is in phenomenal shape.”
Construction managers updated the Board of Education about the progress of the entire project Tuesday. One of the highlights of the capital project is the construction of a new Clint Small Stadium at the Tonawanda High/Middle School campus, and the addition of new field sports lighting and concession stands have been completed. Contractors are currently installing a synthetic track loop at the stadium.
In addition to the new athletic campus, construction around the academic building continues. Contractors are building a new bus loop and sidewalks at the main entrance, and the construction of a new maintenance building is “well under way,” according to Seiflein.
Members of the School Board toured the construction site prior to their regular meeting.
