NIAGARA FALLS – The owner of a city taxi company told police he was ripped off for nearly $1,000 recently by someone who forged one of his personal checks. The owner of Taxi Unlimited on Buffalo Avenue told police that on Thursday afternoon, he checked his bank statement and realized that a check that he had written to a local company, originally for the amount of $158.76, had been cashed in the amount of $1,148.76.
Police examined the check at the victim’s bank and said it was clear that the numerical dollar amount of the check had been altered, but not the word portion of the document. An investigation into the incident is continuing.TOWN OF LOCKPORT – A Simms Road man told police Friday that $4,000 in cash – earmarked for a bank account – was stolen out of the glove box of his car earlier this week. The victim told sheriff’s deputies that he withdrew the money from a bank on Wednesday with the intention of opening a new account, but arrived at the new facility too late to do so. He placed the cash in the glove box of his vehicle until trying again on Friday, when he noticed that it had been stolen. The theft is believed to have occurred while the vehicle was parked at the victim’s residence.

NIAGARA FALLS – A man who called to inquire as to the whereabouts of a Tronolone Place family is believed to have burglarized their home while they were out Friday afternoon, police said. The victims left their residence shortly before 1 p.m. and returned about six hours later to find that a door had been forced open. Items stolen from the home included a pair of X-Box video game consoles, an iPad and a pair of urns valued at $1,000. Total loss was listed at $2,550.
Police are looking to question a man who called the family while they were out, asking where they were and when they planned to return.

NIAGARA FALLS – A Rhode Island woman told police that her car was broken into Friday afternoon while parked in a lot across from the Comfort Inn on Rainbow Boulevard. Sometime between 2:30 and 4:50 p.m. someone broke into the woman’s vehicle by prying a door handle, according to reports, and removed a DVD player, several DVD’s and a purse containing jewelry, credit cards and other personal belongings.
The victim estimated her loss at close to $400.
