LITTLE VALLEY – The State Unified Court System has approved preliminary plans for renovation of the courtroom section of the Little Valley County Center.

The approval will be on the agenda for the next meeting of the Cattaraugus County Legislature.

The renovations, being done for safety as well as a public service, will be reimbursable by the state court system for up to $240,000.

Concerns about the cost weighed on the mind of Legislator William Sprague, D–District 4, Yorkshire, as he asked about the possibility of exceeding that amount.

“There are contingencies in place to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Public Works Commissioner Joseph Pillittere said. “We have a letter from the state that says we are not to exceed that amount.”

Mark Burr, county director of engineering, said, “After we get approval we will develop a scope of work. We already have one” from an engineering consultant. “We would be able to prefile at the next meeting for architectural services.”

The project would include renovation of the second-floor jury rooms and relocation of a law library. Security would be bolstered with the addition of a swipe card system to access attorney and judge offices. Renovations also would include asbestos abatement.
