The race for Amherst supervisor is starting to take shape.
Amherst Council Member Mark A. Manna – the lone Democrat on the Town Board – has requested the endorsement from the Amherst Democratic Committee, which is scheduled to meet today.
Manna, who is in his second term as an Amherst Town Board member, has been toying for a while with the idea of running for supervisor. He made the decision about a month ago and sent formal notice to town Democrats on Monday.
“Amherst faces great challenges,” he wrote to the committee. “I am confident I am the candidate to meet those challenges and will fight to keep Amherst a premier community in New York.”
Manna, 48, said he is hopeful about getting the committee’s endorsement and doesn’t expect a Democratic primary.
That would match Manna in the November election against Republican Supervisor Barry A. Weinstein, who announced in April that he was running for another four-year term.
Manna, who has been an outspoken member of the board, is eager to get his campaign started.
“My opponent has a lot of name recognition, been around for a long time, and he may be viewed as the favorite – but so was Goliath,” Manna said Tuesday.
Manna said he’s running for the same reasons he ran for Town Board in Amherst.
“I was just a citizen who watched the Town Board in action and said, ‘These guys aren’t working for me,’ ” Manna said.
