GOING TO BAT – In the early 1950s, the widow of baseball great Lou Gehrig connected with the Muscular Dystrophy Association to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, the neurological disorder that took her husband’s life.

That fight continues this week with MDA Night on Saturday at Coca-Cola Field, part of MDA’s observance of ALS Awareness Month. Tickets for the 7:05 p.m. game between the Buffalo Bisons and the Charlotte Knights are $11, with part of the proceeds benefiting MDA. For tickets, call the MDA office at 626-0035.

Locally, MDA holds clinics to assist people with ALS in the Dent Neurologic Institute offices in Amherst and Orchard Park and at Buffalo General Medical Center.

SUMMER GETAWAY – All children ages 8 to 13 can go for a week at a summer camp on the shores of Lake Erie, regardless of their family’s financial status, thanks to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

An open house will be held for parents at the St. Vincent de Paul Summer Camp in Angola from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Six weekly sessions are scheduled this summer, beginning July 7. For info and registration, call 882-3360, Ext. 7, or visit www.svdpwny.org.

URGE FOR GOING – The next installment in the free Savvy Senior Travel Series will be held by the AAA of Western and Central New York at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Theatre Room at Asbury Pointe Retirement Community, 50 Stahl Road off North Forest Road, Getzville.

Topics will include multi-generational travel, solo travel and airport security. Representatives from the Erie County Clerk’s Office will offer on-site photos and applications for passports. Light refreshments will be served. It’s open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 810-7500.

BRING YOUR CAMERA – Wednesday Cruise Nights begin this evening at Lt. Col. Matt Urban Post 7275, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 3741 Walden Ave., Lancaster. Awards for classic cars will be presented weekly, and $1.50 hot dogs, $1 draft beers and drink specials will be available. Playing oldies on opening night will be Rockin’ Rick. Cruise Nights continue through Sept. 18.

CURE WANTED – A fundraiser to help find a cure for Glucose Transporter Deficiency, a rare genetic disorder, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, 6525 Ward Road, Sanborn. The afternoon will include a basket raffle, children’s entertainment, free desserts and a Krolick’s chicken barbecue for $8.50 from 5 to 7. Admission is free. For info, call April Breen at 628-3622.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS – Memories of “What North Tonawanda Used to Be” will be shared at the first of what’s hoped to be a series of casual coffee hours from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday organized by Richard Montesanti in the North Tonawanda History Museum, 54 Webster St.

Guest speaker for the debut gathering will be Silviu Dan, who operated Dan’s Grill at 42 Manhattan St., now home to the Park Athletic Club of the Tonawandas. Admission is free.
