Bass Pro is coming to the Niagara region after all.
The hunting, fishing and outdoor activity megastore, which turned down a location on the Buffalo waterfront after a decade of indecision, announced Tuesday that it is planning to open an 80,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outpost store next spring in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula.
The store will be an anchor for the Outlet Collection at Niagara, a 520,000-square-foot shopping center under construction by developer Ivanhoe Cambridge in what Bass Pro described as “a high-visibility site” just off the Glendale Avenue exit from the Queen Elizabeth Way on the western edge of the municipality of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Bass Pro noted that 2.5 million people are within an hour’s drive of the location and that 10 million visit the area annually.
The outlet shopping center will cost almost $200 million to build and will feature nearly 100 retailers, including Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers Outlet, Calvin Klein, Forever 21, Gap Outlet and Izod.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for Bass Pro Shops to place our third Canadian store in this beautiful part of Southern Ontario,” Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris said in a statement.
Bass Pro Shops Outpost stores are smaller than the flagship Outdoor World locations, which range from 100,000 to 200,000 square feet. The nearest Outpost store is a 65,000-square-foot branch in Utica.
The company did not announce how many jobs the new store will create.
