The polls for the Buffalo School Board elections have officially closed as of 9 p.m. and the ballot counting process has begun. Thirteen candidates, including three write-ins, have spent the past few weeks campaigning for six open seats on the Buffalo Board of Education.

Dennis Ward, one of two commissioners with the Erie County Board of Elections, said this evening that turnout seemed higher overall than past years, though still low compared with other elections held in November.

“There's more activity, there's no question,” he said.

He also noted that turnout was surprisingly high in the North District where three candidates are running for a single open seat. Turnout is also expected to be high in South Buffalo's Park District where former gubernatorial nominee Carl Paladino is running for a seat.
