SILVER CREEK – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office will give a presentation on its proposal to provide police coverage for the Village of Silver Creek at a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hanover Town Hall.

Silver Creek Mayor Nick Piccolo, who announced the session, said the meeting is being held in the Town Hall instead of the village’s facilities because a large crowd is expected.

In the last year, the village’s Police Department has lost several full-time officers who moved on to other police departments.

Shifts in the department are covered by one full-time officer and part-time officers.

The department has a long history in the village, dating back to the late 1800s. It was expanded to a full-time department in the 1980s.

Police Chief Timothy Roche could not be reached to comment about the special session, but in a previous interview he said he believed a referendum may be required to eliminate the department.

Piccolo said that after the Sheriff’s Office presentation, there will be a brief question-and-answer period for residents to address questions to the Village Board regarding police coverage.

He said there will be a three-minute limit for questions and asked that residents adhere to the time limit to allow as many people as possible to participate.
