Oh, Christmas Tree
Each little ornament
Is special in its own way.
Reminding us of friends
And time which took place on another day.
Some move us to tears
Because they make us recall
Those we hold so dear
Who have moved away
Or are just no longer here.
A little teapot from a friend
Who shared her sunny way
When she’d pop in to have a cup
On a dreary and lonely day.
The clothespin painted red and blue
With a soldier’s jaunty cap
Made by a boy who’s married now
With children to sit on his lap.
The green felt stocking sprinkled
With glitter on a five-year-old’s first name.
Some are colored outside the lines
But treasured just the same.
The skier, the skater,
The hockey and baseball memories
Hanging from a golden string,
All these records of our lives
Each ornament will bring
A moment of joy to you
As well as me
As once again we start to trim
Our most beautiful Christmas tree.

HALLOWED HALLS – The ghosts of Christmas past will be recalled in “Holiday, History and Haunting” later this week in the Iron Island Museum, 998 Lovejoy St. Programs will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday.
In the Railroad/Children’s Room, historians will explain how Lovejoy Street and Iron Island were named, talk about railroad history and tell tales about the spirits of children in that room.
In the Military Room, there will be stories of neighborhood servicemen who went to war and never returned, as well as the legend of the veteran whose cremated remains were found in the basement of the building.
Meanwhile, in the Chapel Room, visitors can learn about the churches of Iron Island and the spirits that inhabit them.
The museum also is all decked out for the holidays with 10 Christmas trees. Tickets are $5. Refreshments are included. Reservations are recommended. Call 892-3084.

HOLIDAY SPIRITS – The Broadway Market, 999 Broadway, will brighten the end of the shopping season with a Holiday Wine and Beer Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Wineries from Lake Erie Wine Country and the Niagara Escarpment will offer samples, and local breweries will introduce their winter beers.
The market’s specialty food and holiday craft vendors will be open, along with the market’s traditional merchants. Rey Scott & Co. will provide live music, and to complete the festive mood, Santa will be on hand, as well.

TALL ORDER – Looking for a challenge and cause in the new year? The American Lung Association is offering some daunting aerobic exercise in its third annual Fight for Air Climb on March 9. Participants get to climb all 38 floors worth of stairs in the Buffalo’s tallest building, One HSBC Center, to raise money to fight lung disease and support clean-air programs.
Experienced athletes and novice climbers are welcome to race, run or walk up the stairs. Registration is $35, $50 on the day of the climb, and participants must raise $100 in donations.
