The Depew School District is working on a proposed budget of $38.9 million for the 2013-14 school year, an increase of $1.1 million over this year.
The proposed tax levy is $16.6 million, an increase of $568,984. And the proposed tax levy increase is 3.53 percent. The board, which met Monday, expects to adopt a new budget April 19.
Also on the May 21 ballot will be a proposition to use $460,851 from a reserve fund to buy two 66-passenger buses, four 28-passenger vans and a new truck with a plow for the Buildings & Grounds Department for $27,322.
Superintendent Jeffrey Rabey said the money would come from the vehicle purchase reserve fund approved by voters in 2009. Therefore, the purchases do not affect the proposed budget or the tax levy.
Rabey said the district receives state financial aid over five-year periods for vehicles that transport students. That aid includes money that would cover the interest rate that the district would have paid if it had to finance the purchase.
Since the vehicles are paid for from the reserve fund, the state’s payment for interest is “additional” money that’s added back into that reserve fund, Rabey said.
In other business, Michelle Kudla, principal of Cayuga Heights Elementary School, noted that the school’s Parent Teacher Organization raised $600 for the Variety Kids Telethon.
