The 3-year-old East Side boy pulled from a house fire that killed his 23-year-old mother in her attempt to save him early Friday morning died over the weekend, authorities confirmed today.

Malachi Norman was declared brain-dead at 5:55 p.m. Saturday, but he was kept alive so his organs could be taken and given to other children, officials said.

“His father didn’t want him to die in vain,” Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr. said late this morning. “He wanted other children to have an opportunity to live.”

Officials said that five organs were taken from the little boy Sunday before he died.

Firefighters had pulled Malachi and his mother, Lequeisha Watkins, from a rear bedroom in their first-floor apartment at 174 Timon St. early Friday morning.

The mother previously had escaped from the burning home with her fiance and their 2-year-old son, but she apparently went back inside the burning home when she realized their older boy still was trapped there.

Watkins died Friday afternoon in Erie County Medical Center. Malachi was listed in extremely critical condition in Women and Children’s Hospital until he died.
